The State of the News Media 2007

The State of the News Media 2007 is the fourth edition of our annual report on the health and status of American journalism.

Its goal is to gather in one place as much data as possible about all the major sectors of journalism, to identify trends, mark key indicators, note areas for further inquiry and provide a resource for citizens, journalists, and researchers.

For each area we have produced original research and aggregated existing data into a narrative. The statistical data also exists in an interactive area called Charts & Tables where users can customize their own graphics. This year, we also offer a detailed report on the status of online journalism, based on a close quantitative examination of a diverse sample of news websites. “Digital Journalism: A Topography" identifies what qualities of the web are being emphasized and which are not.

Puerto Morelos a gem, despite hassles getting from there

Hard to believe that only 30 minutes away, the unbridled debauchery of spring break was in full fever.

Puerto Morelos is surrounded by national park lands and waters, which is why it remains relatively unscathed by the tsunami of development inundating the rest of the Yucatan's east coast. During the course of the week, I went scuba diving (clear water, lots of sea life, including several big green turtles). And I spent an afternoon swimming in the silky, cool water of one of the underground caves known as cenotes that underlie much of the Yucatan Peninsula. (The water in cenotes radiates a luminous shade of blue that I've seen nowhere else in nature.)

In the afternoons, I walked to the beach and sat down to read a good novel. I'd look at the page, then I'd look at the sea.

Challenger disaster 22 years ago

New Hampshire Congressman Paul Hodes today introduced legislation to honor the Challenger crew.

The resolution will be referred to the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee of which Hodes is a member.

On January 28th, 1986, rubber O-rings failed soon after Challenger's launch, allowing flames to leak out and burn through the orange fuel tank.

The oxygen and hydrogen fuel exploded. Challenger never made it into orbit.

Meanwhile, Friday is the fifth anniversary since shuttle Columbia broke apart over East Texas. The entire crew perished.

Misson Control is at Johnson Space Center in Houston.
