Riding across the Great Divide when I was 7 and spitting on both sides, as was custom; the smell of pine trees by Montanas Two Medicine River; seals, porpoises, jellyfish, sea urchins; the sound of the wind and ocean in a force 12 gale; blue dragonflies by a river with my son; moisture coming up through the grass in early morning; butterflies resting on my cheek both by the ocean and again by a river near a war zone; green northern lights above our ships deck blanketed by deep snow; swimming in natural mineral water; 'wine-dark' seas; full moons and spring tides; standing under a waterfall these are some moments of joy resting forever in my memories. I have always lived beside or very near water: water informs my life. .
Arts Heroes of Black History
Reading these profiles, and others that will follow in February in daily Datebook, is an invitation to remember, to value what's come before as an essential prelude to both present and future. All art exists in a continuum, an open-ended conversation with its own unspooling time line. That may be especially true for artists of color, who, one way or another, have swum in complex currents and enriched a mainstream culture that would be immeasurably weaker without them. By directing our attention to the past, Black History Month summons us to see more clearly where we all are and where we're going together. Black History Month profiles will continue in the daily Datebook section beginning next week. E-mail Steven Winn at swinn@sfchronicle.com.
Five Injured as Hungary Police, Protesters Clash
Five people were injured on Monday in Budapest as thousands of anti-government protesters clashed with police ahead of the anniversary of Hungary's 1956 uprising against Soviet rule. The demonstrators threw molotov cocktails to set a water cannon truck on fire near Budapest's Opera House where Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany was attending a state event ahead of the Oct. 23 anniversary of the uprising. Police used water cannon and fired tear gas during the clashes, one year after protests in 2006 in which hundreds were injured over several weeks of demonstrations. "We are treating five people with light injuries," ambulance spokesman Pal Gyorfi said. Three photographers were among those injured and police arrested three people, Hungarian state news agency MTI reported.
