| Lane shifts begin on John Sims Parkway
Drivers on John Sims Parkway should keep an eye out for traffic flow changes beginning Monday. A lane shift will mark the beginning of the final phase of construction for the roadway. Construction crews will switch eastbound traffic to new travel lanes between Government Avenue and Armstrong Street. Northbound traffic on Government Avenue will also be shifted to new lanes. Four lanes will remain open at all times. Work could be rescheduled because of weather conditions. .
Detroit alone on top as NHL enters 2nd half ready to gear up for ...
Being first in your conference and playing the eighth seed, you have nothing to win really," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "If you lose in the first round, you're a dog. That's probably the toughest round. "Detroit is running away with their conference, for sure, and probably the Presidents' Trophy. Do they have much to play for down the stretch? You can find pros and cons with pretty much everything." The Red Wings were eliminated a step away from the finals last year by eventual champion Anaheim after finishing tied with Buffalo for first in the NHL's overall standings. The Presidents' Trophy winner hasn't captured the Cup since 2002 when Detroit did it. The Red Wings flamed out twice in the previous three seasons after finishing with the best record in the NHL.
Puerto Morelos a gem, despite hassles getting from there
Hard to believe that only 30 minutes away, the unbridled debauchery of spring break was in full fever. Puerto Morelos is surrounded by national park lands and waters, which is why it remains relatively unscathed by the tsunami of development inundating the rest of the Yucatan's east coast. During the course of the week, I went scuba diving (clear water, lots of sea life, including several big green turtles). And I spent an afternoon swimming in the silky, cool water of one of the underground caves known as cenotes that underlie much of the Yucatan Peninsula. (The water in cenotes radiates a luminous shade of blue that I've seen nowhere else in nature.) In the afternoons, I walked to the beach and sat down to read a good novel. I'd look at the page, then I'd look at the sea.
