Underserved Markets Serve Mediacom Well

I still have it today. I own 24% of the company's A stock and I own all the B stock, which gives me 75% voting control of the company."

Mediacom's first big acquisition came in 1998, when it purchased US Cable from Cablevision Systems Corp. The properties served 260,000 customers in 10 states and quadrupled Mediacom's subscriber base. By the following year, Mediacom had purchased Triax Communication and Zylstra, doubling the company's size again to 725,000 customers in 21 states.

Commisso's acquisitions slowed until 2000 when the company went public and was able to use that security to buy systems serving 800,000 customers from AT&T Broadband. The deal doubled Mediacom's reach one more time, to 1.5 million customers, making it the No. 8 U.S. cable MSO. (It could slip to No.

Analyst predicts end of the computer shop

Structurally, it is the end of the 'British Stupid Way' of buying PCs," said Shiret. Computer retailers such as PC World rely on sales of high margin accessories, software and warranties to counter-balance the wafer-thin margins on PCs and laptops.

Meanwhile, Mr Shiret believes that the value end of the clothing market will have a tough year in 2008. He said a poor Christmas trading statement from Marks & Spencer suggested that the clothing market was getting more and more competitive at the so-called entry price level. Value clothing retailers rely on selling high volumes to compensate for their low prices.

Mr Shiret was commenting on his assessment of the Christmas trading statement season, which comes to an end this week when WH Smith reports sales figures on Wednesday.

Election 2007/East: Acrimonious commissioner's race splits ...

The makeup of the new Westmoreland County Commissioners board is known, given the unofficial results of Tuesday's general election. But whether the two Democratic incumbents can make up with the Republican victor is another matter.

In this unusually acrimonious race, incumbents Tom Balya and Thomas C. Ceraso secured victory, but Republican Kim Ward, a Hempfield supervisor, ran strongly in the heavily Democratic county, coming within a hair of topping Mr. Balya, who led all vote-getters for the four-year term.

Shortly after all precincts were reported about midnight yesterday, Mr. Balya, 49, of Greensburg, and Mr. Ceraso, 43, of New Kensington, credited the nail-biter to what they called a "smear campaign" by Ms. Ward, 50, a former county Republican Party chairwoman, and her fellow GOP candidate, George Dunbar, 46, a Penn Township commissioner.
