Thayer: Mock trial offers real-life learning
Students from 12 suburban high schools will gather Saturday at the Kane County Judicial Center to participate in the event. The students make up the teams in this tournament, playing the roles of lawyers, arguing each side of this year’s case, which involves bullying and battery charges.Six Kane County judges preside over the trials, and 18 lawyers evaluate the arguments. What a great way to learn about our legal system – participation. And, the kind of participation in the law that doesn’t involve bail or retaining an attorney. In an age where crime dramas are popular, they sometimes are taken as fact.Any law enforcement professional will tell you that that isn’t the case. It’s not that profound – TV isn’t real. And although the mock trial isn’t technically "real," it’s a glimpse into what is.From that, students will learn a lot.– Kate Thayer covers Kane County courts and can be reached at 630-845-5385, or by e-mail at kthayer@kcchronicle.com.
In Nevada, Obama's message of 'new politics' failed to deliver
Example #1 comes from Michigan, where John McCain last week told the truth when he said that many of the formerly great Michigan industrial jobs will never come back. Romney, on the other hand, sucked up and told everyone they will. I call B.S. on that. Joe blow American can't handle the truth that the halycon days of the 50s are over for good in this global economy and Romney wins big time. Example #2 comes from the Obama campaign. In the Nevada debate he was asked about his biggest weakness. Hmmm, do we all have weaknesses? Last time I checked we do. Well, he tells the truth and says he's not the greatest with paperwork. Edwards, on the other hand, says his biggest weakness is that "he cares too much". Hillary adds that her biggest weakness is that she gets too impatient with the speed of change.
